After the summer break, the MDC welcomes new scientists in leading positions: Darío Lupíañez is a junior group leader at the Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology (BIMSB) and Philipp Mertins is the new head of the Proteomics Platform of MDC and BIH.
For some applications – such as in developmental biology – the genome cannot just be chopped up into tiny pieces before decoding. Instead, long read lengths of several thousand bases are needed. A recent paper in Nature shows what the PacBio sequencer at the Scientific Genomics Platform at the MDC can do.
MRI is zooms in on a scale of life that is crucial to biomedical progress and is attracting highly talented young scientists to the intersection between physics, biology, and medicine. A report from the 8th Conference on UHF MRI at the MDC, held in June.
To save the northern white rhino from extinction an international research team around Thomas Hildebrandt and Sebastian Diecke has chosen an unusual approach. They want to facilitate an in vitro fertilisation by transforming the animals’ skin cells into egg cells.
Mass spectrometry metabolomics at the MDC now has a second leg to stand on: On October 1, Dr. Jennifer Kirwan took up her position as the new head of the Metabolomics Core Facility of the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH), which is situated at the MDC. Dr. Stefan Kempa, who has been in charge until now, will continue to head the Metabolomics Core Facility within BIMSB.
Bound for the Luxemburg Institute of Health, Gunnar Dittmar took a few minutes to look back on eight years as head of the Proteomics Core Facility at the MDC and BIH, and to discuss the near future of one of molecular biology’s most important tools.
Dr. Sascha Sauer has been at the helm of the scientific Genomics platform at the Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology (BIMSB) since August 2016. Among other initiatives, Sauer plans to further develop methods for single-cell analysis and make them available for collaborative projects, as well as overseeing various independent research projects, including in the […]
After 7 years of service and research as head of BIMSB’s Genomics Platform, Wei Chen sets off for a new challenge.
The MDC welcomes Dr Andrew Woehler, who will establish the new Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology (BIMSB) Technology Platform Microscopy from May 1. Andrew will have own research projects and cooperations, but also develop new methods, instrumentation and services for current microscopic technologies (e.g. high-throughput and single-molecule imaging microscopy).
For so long, the numbers were hard to obtain: biologists had to probe gene regulation and other complex cellular processes with only the vaguest sense of the quantities of molecules involved. If a gene was expressed at high enough levels, you could tell whether and roughly when it was switched on and was churning out […]
