Eric Niller and Pirmin Schmid won a special prize in the youth science competition “Jugend forscht”: they have now spent a week gaining work experience in two research groups at the MDC. There are plenty of opportunities at the MDC for larger school groups, too. The institute runs various events to spark young people’s enthusiasm for the life sciences.

Once again the Long Night of Sciences brought thousands of curious visitors streaming onto campus and into the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) for a glimpse into daily life in our laboratories.
During their guided lab tour the research group led by MDC scientist Ana Pombo will take their audience on a journey deep into our cells, revealing basic biological mechanisms and kindling fascination for research.
Genome sequencing is the focus of the discussion “Science with and for society,” which being held as part of this year’s Long Night of the Sciences. It is a technique that in recent years has brought about considerable changes in medicine, particularly for prenatal diagnosis and treatment.
Shadi Hussein works as an intern within the Helmholtz Initiative for Integration of Refugees of the MDC, HZB and HGF in the group of Annette Hammes.
Many researchers at the MDC are investigating proteins or RNA, but these molecules are mostly tightly entrapped in tissue. This is how to get at them …

A doctorate is a key milestone for everyone who wants to embark on an academic career. Numerous postdoctoral researchers – such as Tobias Opialla, who is still unsure about his next steps, or Marina Kolesnichenko, who wants to develop a career in science – are also working in the MDC laboratories. Both are taking up the opportunities provided by the MDC to guide their decision-making.
Transferring MDC inventions into pharmaceuticals and therapies – this is the mission driving MDC’s department of technology transfer. Their latest achievement, a pharmaceutical substance for atrial fibrillation developed by MDC spin-off OMEICOS Therapeutics, is now entering clinical trials.
